Scott,
I am honored that you would allow me to be a feedback reader. I would love to do reading assignments and such. I find what you have to say very moving, and would love to continue to read what you have to say. I promise to be the best feedback reader I can. Just let me know what you need me to do.

Hi, Scott. Very belated thanks for your welcome. Thanks for stopping by the blog, too. I'm no longer with the paper. Maybe I left print journalism just in time? Still, nobody covers news like a media outlet populated by trained professional journos.

I am new at this. My finished YA novel's female character is 13 going on 14. The one I am working on--slow going--has a female lead about the same age. Thanks for writing.

Hey Scott!
Appreciate the warm welcome. Yes I am doing what I love it's actually quite a story in its self. An unfortunate situation turned into me getting time to do what I love. As for a well designed plan as to how I am going to accomplish my goal, well yes and no. I know that in order to do what I love I am going to have to improve so I have looked into classes. Do I have a set scedule for when I am going to finish my book? No. I know that if I spend at least 4 days a week working on it, I will finish. Its a journey and adventure and I don't want to rush it. Plus if I set a date I might rush and forget why I'm writing(Cause I love it). I have faith I will finish in due time. Well hope all is well with you. Do you have a plan for all that your doing? I also am looking forward to conversing with you.
Tay
Ps-Hope I didn't bore you with all my talk ;)

Hi Scott!
Thanks for the welcome! I hope to be able to achieve my goal of writing more and working for others less, as soon as possible. lol Actually I think the end of 2010 is a reasonable goal for myself as well. Let's face it. It all centers around producing a few good stories that sell. All I can do is knuckle down and give it my best shot. I've spent the past 8 years putting my dream on hold; doing things in the community and trying to take care of family obligations. My mother passed away last April after leaving with MS for a number of years and I've cut out all my outside obligations accept for being on the Board of Ed in my town, which really doesn't take up too much time. Letting go of outside interests and cutting back on the TV will put me on the right track. Actually these days I find that I'm not even interested in watching the small screen, I'm that committed to my writing and a couple of critique groups on line. Let's hope we both meet our goal of 2010. Take care and I'm sure we'll be talking again. :-)

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the welcome (shouldn't you be sending me a cake or cookies too? :)). Yes, I've just about finished a novel(ette). It's about 70,000 words. Women's fiction centering on three characters who meet on a tour of Europe. One woman is just getting on with her life after debilitating years of depression. Another is realizing why she can't keep a guy (afraid of failure), and a guy is trying to rekindle his failing marriage of 15 years.

And just today I received an invite from a literary agency to send the first 50 pp of my manuscript. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

And what are you doing?

Hey Scott,

The Tudor era has been a favorite of mine since I first learned bout it in grade school. I have studied it casually since then.

I happened onto paranormal romance some 5 or 6 years ago when I picket up a Laurell K. Hamilton book--one of the first Anita books--I was hooked. That lead me to a genre I had never even considered reading before-romances.

So, in my late 30's I read my first Harlequin--Yuck. But it did get better when I learned there was a sub-genre that mixed my favorites--sci fi and fantasy--with romance and didn't sugar it to death---paranormal romance

I then learned about historical romances and since Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors, fell into reading Regency era romances.

So there you have it--the abbreviated version of my discovery of the romance genre and my life-ling nerdism related to history. What better fodder to write about? =)

Hi Scott

A walking holiday is a hiking vacation, I suppose. I'll get public transport to a place called Cirencester (leaving the car and cats at my parents in Birmingham, England), then walk roughly 10 miles per day to Reading - around 90 miles in all - spending days in between exploring and sightseeing the locality of wherever I'm staying. Then I'll get the train back to my parents, and drive me and the cats home again. I'm really looking forward to it.

Hey Scott, finally got around to your twitter thing. It's amazing how the American landscape is littered with iintelligent, creative beings crammed into society's pigeonholes of jobs & expectations. Meaning I too was born in Detroit; started my college education at 39, 3.5 & 4.0 GPAs (depending where I went & lived), no degree, some odd jobs, still looking for those, altho I have always known I was a born writer. But America frowns on iconoclasts--the writers & poets & musicians who take a stand & refuse to be swallowed whole by the anacondas of industry. It helps to have a Plan B, even a Plan C, but you are young enough (& I take it you don't have kids) to keep your nose to the independent grindstone.

These are ridiculous metaphors, I know, I'm just writing by the seat of my pants. I'm going to research a magazine site looking for writers, & meanwhile look into volunteer work--perhaps the VA hospital here--that would give me human contact as well as maybe lead to something that pays.

I'm an AF vet (Vietnam Era) & former teacher's aid, a mom (she's grown), been jacked around by husband's job losses & relocations, have lived in 13 different states, I think, including Alaska, & I have come to look at it all as writing material.

So don't let yourself being eaten alive--stick to your principles.

Hi there,

I read and used tidbits from the Marshall Plan for "She'll Take It". I didn't follow it for the next two per se, but I always keep writing books on my shelf to help motivate me when I get stuck!

Hey, Scott. Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for hopping over to the blog. Evan found me on there last week ...

Gosh, the questions. I'll have to pop back to my own profile make sure I've not missed one ...

I first read the Marshall Plan several years ago when it first came out, but I'm often dipping into it and using it. I also have the workbook and the 3rd book in the series too. I've photocopied the worksheets for the current project and was wishing it could be made electronic when I discovered the software, and as soon as I got that I was ready to go.

I don't have a favourite book as such, there are so many to choose from. And I don't really have a favourite author, I like quite a few. I suppose if I have to plump for a favourite, it has to be Swallows and Amazons. I'm also a a debut novel freak - I tend to like the first and early books in a writer's career, but that tends to dwindle as they start to "get old".

I met a friend through the blog who lives in Nebraska, and she came to visit me in October last year. This whole internet thing is great for making friends. I hope you make it over to the UK soon. Keep an eye on the blog as I'm going to be journaling the walking holiday and what I do with it publication-wise.

All the best.

Hi,

I actually replied y'day then somehow goofed up sending it. Sheesh. I am def low-tech. Anyway, I'd love to write more & check out your twitters, altho right now my husband returned from a biz trip w/a a very nasty stomach bug & still has it (since Fri night), & I'm fighting off a cold--but am def eager to maintain connection. I started a wrietrs group here where I live (in our condo assoc clubhouse) & it's like pulling teeth to get people to show up. And speaking of pulling teeth, I have a brutal dental appt w/a specialist on Wed--unless my cold scares them away, hee hee.

Well, it's always been my hope to write for money, as I don't have a dime of my own, & haven't for some yrs, & the liklihood gets fainter every ay in today's economy--but I did just apply to that fancy fellowship in the UK, & if I get it, that's 10K pounds plus a room at the university & a MENTOR. I had one & an entire Eng Dept, almost, in So Ca many yrs ago, & when I moved to WI, I floundered.

I will write more later. No, I don't post anything online, btw--I am starting a massive revision of all my stories to send to the wee markets. I have 16 in my collection, a 2nd collection unfinished, & 3 completed novels--& just submitted part of 1 w/a synop to an agent. Hope I'm not repeating myself.

Should get back to hubby & coffee--will respond more later.

laurel/Laury/Kelinda the Bold (I'm a Trekker).

Whoops, look like my last response made it after all. I need a tech tutor.

Nah, I don't post anything. I'm pretty low-tech--I have to be dragged kicking & screaming into the 21st century.

Seriously, I'm getting ready to rewrite all of my short stories in prep of sending them out. The only online "club" I'm in is the Leonard Nimoy fan club. I was in a MI ghost hunters group, but their site always had problems, I couldn't get to any of the investigations, then we finally sold our own house & moved here, & I haven't had time or the best of health to go poking around haunted homes. I'd like to in summer, maybe. I love Ghost Hunters on TV, it's my fave of all the shows of that genre.

Right now I am nursing my husband thru a really nasty flu & am trying to ward off a sore throat of my own, but I will def check out your Quitter thing. It'll be good practice to climb out of my old fogey fog.
Thankfully, my daughter tells me about these new-fangled ways to communicate, & that gets me off the rocker on the front porch of my log cabin.

Thanks again,

Laurel

I agree. And I've noticed that today's market seems to shrink every day--even well-armed, formerly unsinkable markets aren't accepting work &/or not paying. Like The Atlantic--that used to be THE market to drool over & strive for. Not anymore. On the other hand, I am researching smaller markets once again thru NEWPAGE online--lit zines that mostly don't pay, but can look good on a c.v. And accept a variety of styles. I've had to finally accept that I need to start at the bottom again. It's become a new way of life for me, really--major job losses, leaving homes behind, moving, starting over...it's been that way since '02 or so for us. I'm always lived modestly anyway, so am pretty used to it. Poverty can be a 2nd skin, a veneer even.

Writing is not for the faint-hearted, is it!

Thanks again. Must get back to NEWPAGE. I have a s/s collection I'm going to break down & submit individually rather than as a collection (that market is truly vanishing); I actually have 2 such collections, but only 1 completed, EATING POTATO SALAD ON THE LAWN OF THE DAMNED. Are you working on anything?

I'm working on several projects, & have not used the Marshall method. I've been writing my whole life, but still don't know so much. Obviously. Or I'd be famous by now.

Scott -- I just noticed this thread, sorry I didn't reply right away. I settled a law suit against the university last year and so my old site had to be completely taken down, along with all the links to my academic work, which was on the university's server. I'm working a bit every day on getting my stuff up on my own server. Stay tuned. I have a link to my actual blog, on the page that clicks as "blog" on the current site. I actually have a WordPress blog, blog.pamelajeanowens.org that I am migrating into links to the new site.
