The Marshall Planet

A Community of Writers Who Use The Marshall Plan®

Valeria Kendall

Hi, all! Looking forward to working with this group!

Hello, folks!

I just signed up for this group today and I'd like to introduce myself.

I'm a professional writer looking to write more fiction. Actually, I'm doing a complete life makeover...returning myself to the person I was before I was married.

Sad, yes, but on the other hand, makes for great fodder for writing. Out of my bad marriage, I think I can get several nonfiction books and an endless supply of villains for my novels.

Just kidding. (Or am I?)

Actually, I am kind of serious. I am a big proponent of transformative writing, that is, using writing as a means of personal transformation. One of my main arguments is that you can use fiction in the same
way...consciously use events in your life not only to create characters, but also to do so therapeutically...to work through some of the challenges in your life.

We all know intuitively that writing is therapeutic...my work is to show evidence for it and show others how to use it therapeutically.

And for this, the Marshall Plan seems to be the best structure I've found so far to use as a vehicle. Yes, there are other books on and approaches to plotting. But the Marshall Plan is the clearest, most straightforward I've come across.

Sure, there are those who say it's too formulaic. I don't think that's a legitimate complaint -- in fact, I see having things laid out in template form as being an advantage. The purpose is to get that first draft down on paper...after that, you can do with it what you will.

You don't even need to keep using the templates...you can use them as a jumping-off point then abandon them.

So I've decided to use this group, if you don't mind. I intend to use the Marshall Plan to complete that draft by my birthday and post my progress here at least 5 times a week until I have done so.

Anyway, I'm hoping to find some encouragement as I attempt to get the first draft of my NerdLit novel down on paper by June 17, my birthday. The hardest thing to do is to pursue one's dreams in isolation, according to Barbara Sher. She's right. Life intrudes.

I'm not expecting to have the entire thing done, with the requisite number of pages. But if I can have a fleshed out outline with all the scenes/sections done, and a solid story with all the plot points, a more or less decent zero draft (or what I intend to call the "crap draft") I'll feel good about that.

If I don't quite reach that date (after all, it is less than a month away now) I should get pretty darn close.

So wish me luck, please! I'm going to need it.

- Valeria
