I am proud to say that I finished NaNoWriMo! I ended my night Nov. 30 with 50,900 words. The novel itself still has a few more sections left, which I plan to finish this week with the same momentum. The Marshall Plan is actually an excellent tool fo…

I think everybody struggles with this to one degree or another and I agree completely Curt and Gil. The only thing I would add is that it's helpful to me to schedule writing in as part of my daily routine. It's like making time to workout - it's som…

Stephen, I haven't actually clocked myself. Prior to discovering the Marshall Plan, I had a somewhat erratic writing method that consisted of going for several days without writing to suddenly doing ten or twenty pages at one sitting. I have also e…

Stephen, I have the same problems you mentioned, plus a few you left out, and often find myself staring at the screen trying to figure out why the scene that sounded so good in my head suddenly refuses to find its way through my fingers and into my…

Great blog post. I actually wanted to comment on another article I read right after that one: Your "Seven Ways to Write a Book Faster" ezine article. I feel pretty dumb for not thinking of it before, but the "paste liberally" idea is genius. I feel…

Long story short, it's been a month since I've even looked at my one-eighth of a finished first draft. Work, has gotten in the way mostly. I've been on a big project since mid-June, which has a deadline of August 7. I tell myself once I'm back on my…

I like that idea, and that can add to the fact that he doesn't want to be away from his daughter either. It's less selfish than what I had in mind, where Adam's father-in-law is the publisher of the magazine he writes for, and he stays in the marria…

You can always come back and revise as necessary, right? I think there's a way of making Adam sympathetic even though he has cheated on his wife. If I were doing it, I think I would have it that the love has gone from their marriage but Adam hasn't…

I appreciate the kind words, Evan. Since posting this section, I've completed sections 2 and 3 as well. I'm especially relieved that you called it "fast-moving," because I was worried I had added too much background in this section and the next. And…

Wow, this really grabbed me, Stephen. What does Karly want to tell him?! Well written, fresh, and fast-moving. And the crisis comes quickly, which is always good. Excellent. Best, Evan

Hi Stephen, I don't think you can do too much switching. The danger lies in going too long without checking in with one of your VP characters. When you do that, you lose momentum. I would say to switch as often as your instincts tell you to, rememb…

Profile Information

What kind of fiction do you write or would you like to write?
I would like to write darkly humorous science fiction. Dystopia is my primary topic of interest, and I'm inspired by the classics such as Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, and 1984 -- though I acknowledge that the style is dated.
Publishing credits?
I've written for a few local magazines and newspapers in Baton Rouge. For a small magazine, I am a relationship columnist and have self-published a book, entitled "In Love and College," that supplements the weekly column.
Are you working on something now?
I'm currently working on a humorous, dystopian science fiction novel using the Marshall Plan. I've never finished a novel, and I'm determined to finish this one.
Do you have any writing goals/dreams?
My dream is to be a bestselling novelist, but my goal is to have at least one novel published before I die.
Do you use The Marshall Plan® in your writing?
Yes
Do you use The Marshall Plan® for Novel Writing Template Generator software for novelists?
No

How fast can you write?

Or should I ask: How fast do you write?

Reading about the various processes people use to finish their novel, I find that getting through that first draft is a universal struggle. Some people have problems turning off their inner editor. Others second-, third-, and fourth-guess their scenes, characters, or just the entire story itself. And there are those who have a blank-page anxiety -- they never feel like they're prepared enough to sit down and write another scene -- and they waste ho… Continue

AAGGHHH... I told myself I would do this!

Long story short, it's been a month since I've even looked at my one-eighth of a finished first draft. Work, has gotten in the way mostly. I've been on a big project since mid-June, which has a deadline of August 7. I tell myself once I'm back on my normal schedule and not spending 60 hours a week editing technical information for this proposal, I'll start up again.

I'm afraid to open the draft and look at it for fear that I won't know what to write next. I have my section sheets, of course, bu… Continue

Section 1: Written! (Critiques are appreciated)

And that means I've finished the first chapter of my novel! It took me four days of trying to find time, but I did it.

I'm calling the book "Upgrade" unless and until I think of something better. It's a soft science-fiction novel, in the darkly humorous subgenre, about a tech journalist who inadvertently starts a war when he tries to pay off a blackmailer.

This is chapter one, as ready as it'll ever be for an initial critique. Thanks in advance!

A new member's introduction

I've been a member of this site for a few days but haven't had time to formally introduce myself and describe my current project. Time to take advantage of a self-imposed break at the office.

About Me:
I'm 23 years old and live in a suburb of Baton Rouge, Louisiana with my wife (married in July 2008 after six years). In May 2008, I earned a B.A. in English at Louisiana State University and took a job as a proposal writer for a Homeland Security/Emergency Management/IT contracting firm. I… Continue
