Huh, that's cool you made that your mission. I wouldn't consider that weird, it sounds pretty smart. Your wife sounds very lucky. And I can imagine she being an amazing woman, to have you sound so happy in love! I'll have to check out your blog. ...

Thanks, Caroline. Honestly, it's easy to be nice to my wife. :-) Although, I'm somewhat of an unconventional guy (some may say "odd", others may say, "weird"). When I was in my 20s, I began studying what woman most valued in a "good boyfriend/hus...

Mozart, actually, was one of many. Even gifted modern composers are said to have that ability. It's rare but it's there.

Hello Caroline, good for you.

Thank you for the welcome. My completed YA novel, "Jasmine Sea, Dolphin Girl," is about a 13-year-old girl, daughter of a marine "dolphinologist" at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama--where I live--who grew up with and can communicate with dolphins, eventually saving some from kidnapers. My current, YA work-in-progress is about another girl (I am the father of daughters only) captured by insurgents while on a deep sea fishing trip with her father.

I know it cracks me up when my friends look at me like I'm crazy, but it's just really hard to understand if your not a writer...lol...I know what you mean about getting on a roll..my problem is I always tend to get on a roll right at bed time and my body is begging me to sleep, so energy drinks have become my best friend.

Well I'm glad it sounds interesting to you..Yeah I love my imagination..Love it..I wouldnt trade it for anything..There is nothing quite like being in control of these people's lives and knowing the thrive through soley you. Its just so much fun to watch them grow, learn, and fall in love. How did I come up with it? Well I was in the middle of writing my other story and I layed down to go to bed and I was just lying there and the idea popped into my head. I ignored it wanting to finish my other story, but it got to the point it was all I could think about. I swear it was begging me to write so I started. It morphed alot at the beginning, but now it is one solid idea. Anyway do you have an email adress I could send it to you with. Or would you prefer I just message it to you?

I know isnt it crazy just taking a shower or falling asleep, you never know when something is come hit you.
Wow I totally get what you said about being in a low moment and having to spend all that time alone. I get that so much its now even funny. I know what your saying though about your family thinking you where in some crazy depression. My family always thinks I'm hibernating when I write for crazy amounts of time. I also hope I can pick up your novel and be like yeah I totally know her.

Well I have two stories, but I am only focusing on one. Its a young adult novel. The series("Eye's opened" is the first one) which is about a sixteen year old girl who lives in a socialistic country in the future where the government controls everything. When I say everything I literally mean almost everything like who you have children with, how many children you have, what you learn, they have erased emotions for the most part, they control death. Kathryn the lead charecter gets takne during the middle of the night and taken to a St. Sebastions school for the diseased(because she is above ordinary). Over the generations of 'Specials' (Thats what the government calls the ones with abilities) a secret select group of students have organized and call themselves "The Tragics" who try to survive school and find a way out, but no one has been successful because "The Tragics" abilities havent been maxed out. For example one young guy can manipulate fire, but he couldn't create it because he isn't maxed out. So the series is about love, acception, being different, friendship, suicide, death, and the trials teens face in this unique story.
I was wondering if you found the idea interesting? And if you did would you be interested in reading what I have so far? I could really use a young adult readers opinion. Talk to you Later

I saw the comment you left, and also the one you left Renee, where you mentioned having the book finished, and are in the process of editing/revising.

How's that going, is it making the story flow smoother?

Caroline...

You mention that your story covers the life of a girl from the time she's 16 or so until her late 20's. When exactly does she meet Joshua? How does that cause her 'world' to come crashing down around her? What is the exact nature of the 'small stories' you mention?

The first two are obviously related, but what about the third, the small stories? Do they deal with her life after meeting Joshua, or before?

It all comes down to conflict...does she meet him at a young age, where the story would revolve around that type conflict, or does she meet him later, after she's grown comfortable with who she is, and deal with an entirely different form of conflict?

The several small stories you mentioned might be easier to work into the overall picture if they met later, since it would bring up the possibility of having her look at her life to that point and wonder if she's actually made the right choices.

In any case it sounds like it would make an interesting story.

Caroline,
Well it is so refreshing to talk to a young writer...I have always loved writing and creating stories. I am an awesome story teller and I have a zillion journals. So I was taking a shower one day and this idea hit me and I had to write it down. Before I knew it I had written 10,000 words. So it kind of just morphed into a novel. (That was my first idea, I'm only 35,000 words into it). What about you how did you know writing was what you wanted to do?

Hi Caroline,

I think the reason you're having trouble is that you're trying too hard. In other words, you're trying to sound like "a writer" (looking for words in the thesaurus, etc.) when what you really need to do is tell your story in a simple, straightforward way. My advice would be to write your story as if you were telling it to someone you've never met before--not to a friend, because then you might slip into language that's too informal. Try this for your first draft, or to continue with your first draft, and see what happens.

Best,
Evan

Hi Caroline. I do remember you and am delighted that you found my book helpful. I see that your novel is for the Christian/inspirational market. That's a very popular genre these days. To give a novel the best possible chances of selling to a publisher, it always helps to know exactly what category it falls into. For example, there is Christian romance, Christian thrillers, and so on. How would you describe Meeting Joshua? All the best, Evan

Meeting Joshua is still in the editing process. Of course....
I actually wrote a good amount of new chapters. I felt like parts of the overall story were cut short, so I went back and extended them in ways. It helped a lot. Now the some of the characters have more of personalities, and you learn more about their history and things like that. --which has helped me with the who… Continue

lost in more than one story

In my book Meeting Joshua, its basically about a young girl growing up. It starts off when she's simply 16, 17 years old and ends in her late 20s.

I worry that my book is to many things going on at once. When some one asks me "what's Meeting Joshua about?" I never fully know what to say. And when I answer, I feel like it sounds boring. I have no complete explanation of it or I'm not able to explain it with out getting to in depth. There are several "small stories" going on in the one big pictur… Continue
